Healthy Heart Diet

What are some easy meals for a heart healthy diet?
I have recently came home from the hospital. And need to start watching my diet more closely. Need some suggestions till I get to filling better. All help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Found this website that lists many of the diet plans and have an outline of what the diet is. Many may have a free outline of meals for a week would be. Might start with the American Heart Association guidelines and diet plan to get use to what is out there. Personally, I lost some weight with the Special K program, have cereal for breakfast, a protein bar for lunch and your meal for the night with two small snacks one before lunch and one mid day. I don’t have the two snacks, never that hungry for snacks. I have lost about 10 pounds in 2 months.

Congestive Heart Disease

Does anyone else out there have Atrial Septum Defect, (hole in heart) discovered as an adult?
What are some of the recommended treatments when this congenital heart disease is discovered in someones 50’s, for instance? Repair of the hole, only medicines, or what? Mine is very small hole, and they just said take low dose aspirin. But this condition puts me at risk of scary things such as stroke and congestive heart failure. What are other people doing about this, when discovered in adulthood?
They also found some rare condition about a “left superior vena cava,” I think. They didn’t tell me, I just read that on the radiologists report I requested. Am I correct that it is harmless unless I have to have open heart surgery or something???
Let me assure you that many folks live a long and healthy life with ASDs, as long as they are small and don’t produce significant shunting. In fact, an ASD is the most common congenital heart defect detected in an adult. You were asked to take low dose aspirin to prevent strokes. As long as there is no significant shunting going on (and a cardiologist can tell you this), you won’t get congestive heart failure.
Treatments, if there is significant shunting, include surgery or an occlusion device placed via cardiac catheterization. However, this is not something that has to be fixed, if there is no significant shunt. The degree of shunting is easily calculated by echocardiography and is called the pulmonic to systemic flow ratio; as this ratio gets above 1.5 to 1, most authorities consider repair.
You might ask whether you need to take antibiotics before dental procedures, as endocarditis prophylaxis is recommended for ASDs.
The left superior vena cava is nothing to get concerned over. We all start out having one in utero, and yours just persisted—hence persistent left superior vena cava. You may just want to remember it for your health history in case you ever need a pacemaker or central venous catheter placed for surgery. It would complicate those procedures and the physician will want to use your right side instead of the left.
Talk it all over with your own cardiologist.

Symptoms Of Heart Failure

Please.Im scared I might have symptoms of heart failure?
I have been to two doctors and a nurse friend says that they think that im depressed but have no issues with my heart. One was a vascular specialist..I do however hear my heart beat clearly in my ears.,a benign condition so they say ..{I looked up heart failure and really don’t seem to have any symptoms of heart failure other than perhaps hearing somthing that doesnt sound right when I hear my heartbeat.I noticed it alot this morning when I was resting because of fluid in my ears.It sounds like my heart is hesitating and almost as if its going to stop.I don’t know if this is just the sound of the blow flow or breathing or what.I can hear my heartbeat so well its like its in my head.I got worried and tried to find the answer but everything that I read online suggest other symptoms I don’t have..
This was another thing that my doctors noted that they just didn’t have reason to believe I had any heart issue..I am just wondering could the sound I hear be normal cardiac sound or sinister?
Heart failure does not mean the heart stops, it is simply not pumping blood as it should so the body does not get as much blood and oxygen as it needs.
It is also your responsibility to carefully monitor yourself and help manage your condition. One important way to do this is to track your weight on a daily basis. Weight gain can be a sign that you are retaining fluid and that the pump function of your heart is worsening. Make sure you weigh yourself at the same time each day and on the same scale, with little to no clothes on.
Other important measures include:
* Take your medications as directed. Carry a list of medications with you wherever you go.
* Limit salt and sodium intake.
* Don’t smoke.
* Stay active. For example, walk or ride a stationary bicycle. Your doctor can provide a safe and effective exercise plan based on your degree of heart failure and how well you do on tests that check the strength and function of your heart. DO NOT exercise on days that your weight has gone up from fluid retention or you are not feeling well.
* Lose weight if you are overweight.
* Get enough rest, including after exercise, eating, or other activities. This allows your heart to rest as well. Keep your feet elevated to decrease swelling.
Here are some tips to lower your salt and sodium intake:
* Look for foods that are labeled “low-sodium,” “sodium-free,” “no salt added,” or “unsalted.” Check the total sodium content on food labels. Be especially careful of canned, packaged, and frozen foods. A nutritionist can teach you how to understand these labels.
* Don’t cook with salt or add salt to what you are eating. Try pepper, garlic, lemon, or other spices for flavor instead. Be careful of packaged spice blends as these often contain salt or salt products (like monosodium glutamate, MSG).
* Avoid foods that are naturally high in sodium, like anchovies, meats (particularly cured meats, bacon, hot dogs, sausage, bologna, ham, and salami), nuts, olives, pickles, sauerkraut, soy and Worcestershire sauces, tomato and other vegetable juices, and cheese.
* Take care when eating out. Stick to steamed, grilled, baked, boiled, and broiled foods with no added salt, sauce, or cheese.
* Use oil and vinegar, rather than bottled dressings, on salads.
* Eat fresh fruit or sorbet when having dessert.

Signs Of Heart Failure

Did our dog just have a seizure?
My fiance and I were gone overnight, and left our dogs in the care of a dogsitter. When we came home, our 15 year old Boston Terrier ran around excited, then collapse, with her muscles tightened, eyes bulging, crying, and she urinated. After about 15 seconds, she got up and has been acting fine since.
She has mitral valve regurgitation. She has no history of seizures in the past. Was this a seizure? A sign of heart failure? Any thoughts?
yes this was definately a seizure. my dog did the same thing and after a few more seizures and lots of tests from the vet they diagnosed her with epilepsy. she is now on phenobarbital and hasnt had one in 2 months. you mentioned your dog has MVR, i’m not sure if that would have something to do with why she had the seizure but you should take her to the vet as soon as possible even though she is acting fine now. good luck:)

Heart Risk Factors

what are the risk factors for 72 year old haveing a triple heart bypass?
hi my mother is having a triple heart bypass next week. she is 72 years old had one previous minor stroke and one of her heart valves is twisted and has been probably since birth. she has an 80 percent blockage in each artery.
what would be the expected average survival rate for someone her age and what complications can occur after op.
she also has a lesion on the lower part of her heart.
how long does it take to recover as i dont know what to expect.
This is a very complex issue that no one could begin to scratch the surface of on a site like this. I will preface this by saying the best person to answer these questions will be the surgeon that will be doing the surgery…
Expected average survival rate: There is about 5-6% mortality (immediately after surgery) rate in people undergoing bypass surgery in the US. The number rises to 10% a year after surgery. This is based on her age group.
Other Risk Factors that can increase complication rates:
Age — patients over 70 are at a slightly higher risk for complications
Gender — women have a slightly higher risk
Having another serious medical condition (such as diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, kidney disease, or lung disease)
Previous heart surgery — puts a person at a higher risk
Complications:
Blood clots
Death (very small risk)
Heart attack
Sternal wound infection (this complication most often occurs with obesity, diabetes, or having had previous CABG)
Stroke (the risk is greatest in those over 70)
Prolonged ventilator dependence.
Lesion in the lower part of her heart: I would assume that by using the term lesion, that you mean another blockage. That will be taken care of during the surgery depending on the size of the vessel. (Really small vessels they cant always fix.
Recovery: Recovery is based on many things and differs between people. I would say a minimum of 6 months before she really starts to feel herself again. Other people say closer to a year. Things that will help speed her recovery are:
-Don’t smoke
-Eat a healthy diet
-Get regular exercise including participation in cardiac rehab
-Take medications as recommended by the physician including the agressive treatment of high blood pressure and high cholesterol
I HOPE YOUR MOTHER DOES WELL!!

What Causes Heart Disease

What REALLY CAUSES Coronary Heart Disease – Now We Know That Saturated Fat And Cholesterol Absolutely DON’T
What really causes coronary heart disease?
Ancel Keys’s research has ZERO scientific validity as he LEFT OUT data available from 22 other that CONTRADICTED his theory. Also his false theory was an epidemiological study – which is the LOWEST of the low and is not good enough.
Most importantly there has not been one tightly controlled clinical intervention trial that has ever shown saturate dfat to increase CJHD mortality or incidence.
So what REALLY CAUSES CHD?

There are many factors that contribute to development of atherosclerosis, but the primary cause is the profound changes that have taken place in the American diet during the past century, particularly:
1. Imbalance in consumption of essential fatty acids (too little omega-3 as in fish, too much omega-6 as in corn oil, soybean oil, etc.)
2. Excess consumption of carbohydrates particularly sugars and high fructose corn syrup.
3. Eating too much (too many calories).
4. Free radicals in process liquid vegetable oils and trans fatty acids partially hydrogenated vegetable oils.
5. Nutrient deficiencies.
The kind of diet that the American Heart Association recomends is contributing to the high rates of cancer, heart disease and stroke. Eat liquid vegetable oils and margarine stay away from saturated fat like butter and coconut oil….blah…blah…blah..
Has anyone told the AHA that butter and coconut oils are the healthiest fats on the planet.

They fail to mention that the liquid vegetable oils and tub margarines are rancid oils. Because high heat is used to process these oils and the high heat makes the oils rancid (free radicals) and food companies will deodorize the oils to hide the rancid smell. So all those vegetable oils you see on the shelf that look clean and don’t smell bad are really rancid. Unless it says “Cold Pressed” oil it’s ok. That means high heat was not used in processing. But you should never cook with vegetable oils because the polyunsaturated fats are very vulnerable to damage. It’s safer to cook with the more saturated fats or monounsaturated fats like beef tallow, lard, coconut oil, olive oil, sesame oil… http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/index.html
The myths and truths about nutrition:
http://www.westonaprice.org/mythstruths/mtnutrition.html
There are two kinds of LDL-cholesterol. The light, fluffy LDL is good. Light fluffy LDL is a building block of lipoprotein, so the fact that it is being increased for repair is probably good.
The small dense LDL is thought to be bad. One study showed that a lowfat diet in children raises this bad kind of cholesterol.
Dreon, MD et al, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2000 71:1611-1616).
The typical American diet results in increased production of triglycerides, decreased levels of HDL-cholesterol, and a preponderance of small, dense LDL-cholesterol particles, a condition referred to as the atherogenic lipid triad. The increase in the atherogenic potential of LDL arises from the increase in the number of small dense LDL particles, not from the cholesterol content per se. Small dense LDL particles more easily penetrate the arterial wall, initiating atherosclerotic injury, which leads to the development of inflammation and plaque.
Proc Nutr Soc, 199 Feb:58(1);163-69.
The development of highly atherogenic small dense LDL particles is thought to be due to high insulin levels and excess triglycerides that result from excessive carbohydrate and caloric intake and from an imbalance of essential fatty acids. Res Commun Moi Pathol Pharmacol, 2003:113-114:87-95 and Prostoglandins Leukot Essent Fatty acids. 1997 Oct;57(4-5):379-85.
Other factors that contribute to atherosclerosis are smoking, inactivity and stress.
It is not unusual for those who adopt a healthy low-carbohydrate diet to experience a reduction on Triglycerides and increase HDL by 50 to 75 percent, indicating a dramatic decrease in insulin resistance, inflammation and levels of small LDL particles, and further indicating reduced risk of diabetes, cornorary artery disease and adverse cardiac events.
